To Ostrava ZOO on AWT sidings

AWT Group, a member of PKP CARGO, has signed a memorandum on cooperation with the City of Ostrava to prepare a project called Ostrava ZOO Transport Services, which is part of the Strategic Development Plan of Ostrava for 2017-2023.

The seasonal and off-season growth in the number of visitors to the ZOO in Ostrava and a lack of parking space near the zoo has led city authorities to consider possible transport alternatives. They include using existing rail siding connecting attractions for city visitors to suitable catch points for public and private transport.

The Ostrava ZOO Transport Services project includes the use of AWT sidings to bring visitors to the zoo from train stations around the city. A part of the plan is to build related infrastructure, such as platforms, crossings, footpaths and another entrance to the ZOO near the lower parking lot where AWT tracks lead.

“We know that the use of AWT railway siding connecting the center of Ostrava with the residential and industrial areas is technically and operationally feasible for mass transit. Today the interest is there from the City of Ostrava to explore the possibility of transferring people on AWT railway siding between urban hubs and leisure activity locations for residents and visitors to Ostrava, especially the zoo, Lower Vítkovice or Karolina and Michal Mine,” said Bohumil Bonczek, the Technical Director of AWT.

The signing of the memorandum of cooperation on the preparation of the Ostrava ZOO Transport Services project between the City of Ostrava and AWT will be followed by awarding a feasibility study for the project and proposing the technical and operational measures for the project.
