AWT Rekultivace is returning Ostrava to its original, clean landscape

  • March 20, 2019

AWT Rekultivace, a member of PKP CARGO Group, offers comprehensive services related to reclamation and earthworks, construction, demolition work and design activities. It has presently won an important contract for the demolition and reclamation of areas where an “agglomeration” of iron ore plants was previously located within Vítkovice Ironworks. The whole contract is funded by the Ministry of Finance from the state budget and aims to further modernize the wider city center of Ostrava, which in the past had been severely impacted by local heavy industry.

The company has been traditionally engaged in the elimination of the negative consequences of mining and industrial activity, especially in the Ostrava-Karviná region, as well as in all industrial areas of the Czech Republic or abroad in Poland.

“Today’s know-how is the result of years of the work and experience of several generations of workers that has allowed us to efficiently and comprehensively link services across construction, reclamation, restoration, transport and design,” says Kamil Holenda, Chairman of the Boards of Directors and CEO of the company.

The portfolio of services primarily includes setting up and operating dumps, waste dumps and tailing ponds, earthworks carried out using machines and explosives, construction works, special earthworks, demolition, construction of landfills, disposal of industrial wastes, including their transport, decontamination of contaminated soil, remediation of legacy impacts and restoring the productivity of a landscape scarred by mining. It also operates landfills or recycles secondary raw materials.

The company has the necessary special equipment and trained personnel. Its unique know-how finds use in locations where it is necessary to deal with old environmental impacts. In addition to its core activities, which are largely linked to mining activity, the company in recent years has been working to diversify its services and enter the market for the remediation of old contaminated sites and brownfield regeneration.

An example of this activity is the successful acquisition of a contract for the demolition and reclamation of areas where an “agglomeration” of iron ore plants was previously located within Vítkovice Ironworks. “In addition to the demolition of old buildings, the contract also includes the relocation of utility networks, the complete regeneration of the area, including the removal of hazardous materials and related landscaping. The whole contract is funded by the Ministry of Finance from the state budget and aims to further modernize the wider city center of Ostrava, which in the past had been severely impacted by local heavy industry,” adds Kamil Holenda.

The most important projects of the company in the past include the remediation of the area where Nová Karolina shopping center now stands in Ostrava, the construction of the municipal football stadium in Karviná, the reclamation of the Tuchlovice dump, the construction of the first stage of the Hornbach shopping center in Ostrava-Jih and building the golf course in Karviná Lipiny, which arose on land affected by mining activities and which was, until several years ago, a “moonscape”.
