AWT, a member of PKP CARGO Group, has completed Phase III of modernizing Terminal Paskov. The modern Paskov intermodal transshipment depot has an area of 70,000 m² and capacity of 4800 TEU on 3 rails covering 270 m and 2 rails covering 375 m. It is located in the vicinity of industrial zones and the borders of Poland and Slovakia. From Terminal Paskov, AWT provides customers with comprehensive services connected to the intermodal transshipment of goods.

Its strategic position in the heart of Europe gives it quick and easy access to major European ports and terminals. It can be found close to highways and it has a rail connection to the national rail network. So far approximately 450 million CZK have been spent constructing the Terminal, of which the EU provided subsidies worth 151 million CZK and various ministries of the Czech Republic 12 million CZK. In 2018, the Terminal performed 165,000 handling operations.

The Terminal is used by both AWT and external companies and manages all activities related to handling, transport and distribution, to the light repair of containers, to clearing trains and storing containers on site, and to providing customs services at an office located at the Terminal complex.

“The terminal in Paskov is one of the leading intermodal transshipment depots in central Europe today and enjoys great interest among our customers. We began building the Terminal in 2007 on the brownfield of the former Paskov mine and we have just now completed the third phase of modernization, which included building new facilities for operating the Terminal and doubling capacity. The PKP CARGO Group, which operates a total of 27 terminals of this type, has big plans for the future of the transshipment depot in Paskov and related intermodal transport and we are already preparing a fourth phase of expansion,” says Maciej Walczyk, the Chairman of BoD of AWT.

AWT has nine container stackers at this terminal able to stack containers up to five layers, and they handle not just ordinary ISO containers, but also semi-trailers and swap bodies. There is a parking area at the Terminal for up to 130 trailers, connections for refrigerated containers and a special place for containers carrying hazardous goods. The facilities also include an advanced traffic control center for dispatchers, a customs and declaration office, and other related external services and companies.

“At present the most common destinations in the north-south direction are the ports of Koper, Trieste and Gdansk, and articulated trains from Scandinavia or transports from the Greek port of Piraeus are a potential for intermodal transshipments,” says Michal Kubíček, managing director of Terminal Paskov.

The terminal was founded in 2007, with Phase I taking place in 2008-2009 and Phase II, involving expansion and modernization, in 2011-2012. Further modernization of the Terminal began in February 2018 with Phase III. This doubled the size of the handling area to 70,000 m² and the capacity to 4800 TEU. Two new tracks measuring 375 m in length were built. This phase of modernization was provided by an investment of 230 million CZK, of which 151 million CZK came from EU subsidies. All modernization will be completed in 2020 with the reconstruction of adjacent siding and extending four tracks to a length of 750 m. This will make it possible to receive complete container trains.

The Terminal currently serves ten major customers, including Maersk, MSC, COSCO, EKOL and LKW Walter. Every month approximately 14,000 operations with containers and trailers takes place at the depot.

Planning another phase of modernization and expansion of the Terminal is now underway and this Phase IV should commence in July 2019 with the demolition of the adjacent buildings belonging to the former Paskov mine. The demolition is expected to be finished by the end of 2020. The handling area will increase by approximately 30,000 m² and provide parking for semi-trailers.

Continuing modernization, expansion and reinforcement of handling areas require additional investment. Once Phase IV has been completed, the final area of the depot will cover 150,000 m². Part of the railway siding will be used for another handling track, measuring 400 m in length. The Terminal will reach a total capacity of 10,000 TEU.

The project is co-financed by the European Union funds from the program Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Transport.
